1st Grade Phileas’s Fortune

In April, I shared the book Phileas’s Fortune by Agnés de Lestrade and Valeria Docampo and translated from the French by Julia Frank-McNeil with our RBE 1st graders.

This book is a special book because it asks reader’s to imagine a world where people cannot just say whatever they want. In this story, people must buy and eat the words they wish to speak.

Phileas of course is a young boy without the fortune necessary to buy the words he desperately wants to say to his friend on her birthday. So, he catches some words in a net and save them. On her birthday, he speaks very simple but beautiful words to her.

After reading this story, I asked the students what word or phrase they would say to someone they loved if they lived in a world like Phileas’s. The kids came up with a variety of things, but they all thought hard about what to choose.

Here is the document, click here,  I created to use with the kids for this story time.

You can see their choices and their art below. Enjoy!
