For English 2 and English 2 Advanced Independent Reading for Unit 1, students will be examining the allure of fear. The allure of fear is a powerful attraction. Similarly, the concept of “scary but fun” appeals to many of us. You will read selections offering insights into why people enjoy stories that put us on the edge of their seats. We will examine how creators use various techniques, including the elements of characterization, plot, and the development of themes, to contribute to the allure of fear.
Students will choose a book that deals with one (or more) of the following:
- a character confronts a fear
- a character in a fearful situation, context, or setting
- a thriller that exhibits plot elements contributing to a theme centered around fear
- a mystery text that uses techniques to evoke fear
Independent Reading is every student reading a text of their choice. Texts are selected by the students, based on their interests and reading level. Teachers may help students select texts, ask students to select a text from a particular genre, theme, or topic, as suggested by the curriculum; teachers cannot select the text for students. The purpose of independent reading is to provide opportunities for students to apply reading skills and strategies independently and develop a sense of ownership and purpose for reading.
Reminders:
- Students can acquire an independent reading books from the Reedy Library, home, a public library, etc.
- Students should seek guidance from a parent/guardian when selecting a book.
- Students may also choose an ebook or digital audiobook from either MackinVia or Sora.
