2nd Grade Predictions & The Day the Crayons Quit

Crayons Quit

Last week at the RBE Library, our 2nd graders came in to the library to read a great new book with me and learn about making predictions.

We read the awesome new book The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt with pictures by Oliver Jeffers. We started out by making a prediction about why we thought the crayons might be quitting based on the title and cover.

Then we read about halfway through, to the black crayon page and stopped. After we saw some of the different reasons the crayons were upset, we made a prediction about what Duncan might do at the end with all of his upset crayons to make them happy again. We also predicted what other colors we might see in the second half of the book.

At the conclusion of the book, we wrote about and illustrated how the book ended. We also discussed why it is important as good readers to make predictions as we read.

The activity sheet we used to record our thinking and create our own illustrations can be found here. Below are some pictures from the activity as well!
