The RBE Library is seeking funds to create a Makerspace!

You may be asking yourself, what IS a makerspace anyway?

Our makerspace will be a place for kids to explore, design, and create. Students will be given the opportunity to use many different materials to create something.

Makerspaces come in all shapes and sizes. They all serve as a gathering point for tools, projects, mentors and expertise.  A Makerspace is a learning environment rich with possibilities. I hope to provide a place for more kids and adults to connect to a future in which they can personally change, modify or “hack” the physical world, creating things. Making is about getting hands-on, using  new technologies and basic tools, to do real and personally meaningful work.

I am starting with some basic craft materials and school supplies, to use with teachers this year as we create some opportunities for students to use hands-on materials for Math & Science lessons. In order to get these materials, I have created a Donors Choose Project.

I want to make sure my students have the materials they need to succeed. So I’ve created a classroom project request at DonorsChoose.org, an award-winning charity.

I’m asking for donations of any size to help my students. For the next week, any donation you make to my project will be doubled (up to $100). If you know anyone who is passionate about education, please pass this along. Your donation will brighten my students’ school year, and you’ll get photos and thank yous from our students.

Here’s my RBE Library request:

To have your donation matched dollar for dollar, enter the promo code INSPIRE on the payment screen. This awesome match offer lasts through December 5, 2013.

As I move forward to create a Makerspace, I will also be writing grants and seeking additional funding for the following items:

LEGOs™

Little Bits

  • consists of tiny circuit-boards with specific functions engineered to snap together with magnets. No soldering, no wiring, no programming, just snap together for prototyping, learning and fun.
  • Each bit has a specific function (light, sound, sensors, buttons, thresholds, pulse, motors, etc), and modules snap to make larger circuits.
  • Just as LEGO™ allows you to create complex structures with very little engineering knowledge, littleBits are small, simple, intuitive, blocks that make creating with sophisticated electronics a matter of snapping small magnets together.

Minecraft Edu licenses

  • Every day, more and more teachers are using the world-building game Minecraft to engage and educate.
  • The game is a true phenomenon and gamers young and old are using it in countless creative ways.
  • Practitioners of Games Based Education have realized the potential and have embraced Minecraft in classrooms around the world.
